Tanzania's tax authority, TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority), operates the VFD (Virtual Fiscal Device) system - a cloud-based fiscalization platform that replaces the older physical Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) hardware. Every taxable sale must be submitted to TRA via the VFD system and fiscalized before a receipt is issued to the customer.

TRA

TRA (Tanzania Revenue Authority) is the agency of the Government of Tanzania responsible for the assessment, collection, and accounting of all revenue due to the government in accordance with the laws of Tanzania. TRA administers key taxes including VAT, corporate income tax, PAYE, and excise duties.

The VFD System

The Virtual Fiscal Device (VFD) system is TRA's cloud-based fiscal receipt platform. It enables businesses to submit sales data electronically and receive a digitally signed fiscal receipt - without needing physical EFD hardware. Each fiscal receipt carries a unique fiscal code and QR code that taxpayers and auditors can use to verify authenticity on the TRA portal.
